Microphone grilles are the durable shell that protects the microphone’s element. This is particularly important for guarding the sensitive machinery of a condenser mic, but grilles perform the same function for the more sturdy dynamic mics as well. Most grilles are constructed of stainless steel, meaning they’re easy to clean (a boon for vocal mics or mics that need to be shared between users) and are rugged enough to stand up to the demands of live sound and studio recording applications. The typical grille is simple to twist off the mic’s body, allowing you to swap it for a new one when needed.

A microphone windscreen usually fits over the grille (although some microphone grilles come with built-in windscreens on their interior). As the name suggests, this accessory screens your sound from the wind…but it also does much more than that, isolating the pops and plosives of speaking and singing, as well as reducing other environmental noise. Even more than grilles, windscreens are susceptible to wear, accumulation of dust, gathering germs, and other factors that make replacing them a good choice for aesthetic, health, and audio quality reasons.
