Building on the feature-packed DR-40 model, the DR-40X boasts a revamped layout that can be controlled with one thumb. Start and stop recordings, adjust volume, delete bad takes, and add marks with the press of a button. Use Level Align to smooth out volume jumps during playback, while the DR-40X’s built-in speaker lets you check back on your recordings as you make them for instant problem-solving.

Additional features include variable speed audition, low-cut filtering, chromatic tuner, and more—all the options you need to edit audio on the go or add a personal spin on your home studio projects. Choose from 3 auto level modes (Limiter, Peak Reduction, Auto Level) to prevent accidental audio distortion. Select one out of 6 reverb effects options to the input or output signal. An Overdub feature lets you add vocal or instrumental audio to preexisting files. Dictation Mode lets you jump back and forth when playing back a file, perfect for transcribing meetings, while Overwrite mode lets you replace part of an existing recording.

The DR-40X includes a pair of cardioid condenser microphones. These mics handle high SPLs and can be configured in AB or XY orientation for a wide stereo field or hyper-focused on a single sound source. Connect another mic or line-level source through dual Neutrik XLR/TRS combo jacks that support both mic level and +4 dBu line level from mixers or consoles. The mic preamps include 48V phantom power and plenty of gain to capture loud and quiet sounds with equal clarity. The DR-40X also offers dual-level recording which automatically creates a second file on a lower level—the perfect backup in case of distortion.
