Microphone grilles are the durable shell that protects the microphone’s element. This is particularly important for guarding the sensitive machinery of a condenser mic, but grilles perform the same function for the more sturdy dynamic mics as well. Most grilles are constructed of stainless steel, meaning they’re easy to clean (a boon for vocal mics or mics that need to be shared between users) and are rugged enough to stand up to the demands of live sound and studio recording applications. The typical grille is simple to twist off the mic’s body, allowing you to swap it for a new one when needed.

A microphone windscreen usually fits over the grille (although some microphone grilles come with built-in windscreens on their interior).
