Lighting designers, programmers, and production electricians use a motorized iris to turn a static Source Four beam into a programmable look. Beam size becomes a cue parameter: tighten a pool of light on a performer, open it to flood a playing area, or time a slow reveal of a gobo from the console.
Compared with a manual iris, DMX control keeps the effect in the cue stack and removes ladder time for refocus between scenes. Compared with moving lights, it adds beam-size movement to conventional fixtures already hung in the rig, which suits theatre, touring productions, houses of worship, and corporate staging where budgets favor existing Source Four inventory. It is a fit for designers who want an effect that reads clearly from the house without adding fixtures to the plot.
The unit ships without power, so plan for it at the rig. City Theatrical lists a separate power supply that runs up to two irises, so figure one supply for every pair of fixtures. Check the DMX address plan and cable runs before load-in, since each iris takes a slot in the universe.
