Soft gobo edges are a familiar problem in theatrical, touring, and event lighting, and a donut is a direct fix for ellipsoidal spotlights. It sits in the color frame slot at the front of the fixture and narrows the aperture, much like squinting sharpens what the eye sees, so projected patterns hold tighter edges at focus. Some output is given up in exchange, a tradeoff many designers accept when a template has to read clearly from the house. Cleaner template edges also make logos and textures easier to read in both long runs and one-off events.
This family is built for lighting designers, production electricians, and venue crews working with Source Four, Strand SL, Shakespeare, and Pacific (19-50°) ellipsoidals. Adding a donut is a faster, lower-cost route to a cleaner pattern than replacing fixtures or reworking a plot.
Because a smaller opening yields a sharper image with less light, the range gives you a choice between crispness and output on a per-look basis. City Theatrical also makes donuts sized for other fixture families, so a rig with mixed ellipsoidals can be matched across the board.
