This series of 5-pin DMX cables is purpose-built for that context, with a construction stack engineered around the EIA-485 DMX512 standard and the physical realities of working stages, permanent installs, and broadcast environments. Available in lengths from 3 ft. to 100 ft., the series covers patch runs inside racks and bays, standard fixture-to-fixture bridging across a stage, and full-distance universe runs in large venues where a single cable failure can take down an entire lighting zone.
At the core of every cable in this series is a dual twisted pair, 4-conductor oxygen-free copper construction running at 110 Ohm nominal characteristic impedance, the exact spec required for EIA-485 DMX512 data. Twisted pair geometry is not a convenience feature on a data cable; it is the primary mechanism for rejecting the electromagnetic interference and common-mode noise that corrupt DMX packet data and cause unpredictable fixture behavior. On top of that geometry, a dual-shield system combines 100% coverage DuoFoil with an 85% coverage tinned copper braid, stopping RF interference and external electrical noise at the cable surface before it can reach the conductors. Polyethylene conductor insulation and a polyethylene inner jacket maintain stable dielectric properties across frequency, while a flexible PVC outer jacket handles the coiling, routing, and physical stress of repeated production use.
Both ends are terminated with ProX branded all-metal XLR-5 connectors featuring gold-plated contacts. Gold plating resists corrosion and sustains a low-resistance connection through thousands of mate and unmate cycles, which matters on any cable deployed regularly across touring or installed systems. These cables are engineered strictly for DMX512 digital data. DMX cables and audio cables are not interchangeable; using an audio cable in a DMX run can cause data errors, intermittent fixture behavior, or complete signal loss. Always match the cable type to the application.
