Direct Boxes

A direct box (also called a “DI box” or simply “DI” for direct inject or direct input) is a device that converts unbalanced, high-impedance outputs to balanced low impedance. This allows for longer cable runs without compromising audio quality by adding noise. Most direct boxes are equipped with at least one input and two outputs: One input can be connected to an instrument amplifier, while the other connects to a PA system.

Direct boxes are basically transformers, bridging between inputs and outputs via electromagnetic induction. Direct boxes can be passive—meaning they do not require power to operate—or powered (active)—which are akin to preamplifiers by boosting signal power. Some specialty direct boxes are also available, each of which adds specific functionality to your audio setup.
