Frequently Asked Questions
-
What’s the difference between the JBL SRX and PRX series, and which one do I need?
Both are pro grade JBL workhorses, but they’re built for different jobs. The PRX900 Series is a portable powered PA platform with single boxes like the PRX912 (12 inch top) and PRX918XLF (18 inch sub) that fly on poles or stack on stage. It’s perfect for mobile DJs, bands, corporate AV, festivals, smaller venues, and rental fleets that need a punchy, durable, road ready point source rig.
The SRX900 Series steps you up into scalable line array territory. The SRX906LA is a flyable dual 6.5 inch line array element, and the SRX918SF is a flyable powered 18 inch sub designed to hang or ground stack with it. SRX is the move when you need real array coverage for mid sized venues, theaters, ballrooms, and growing rental inventories.
Quick rule of thumb: point source equals PRX, line array equals SRX.
-
Is the PRX912 enough for a live band or DJ gig, or do I need to add a sub?
For acoustic acts, smaller corporate gigs, speeches, and most DJ style coffeehouse or patio events, the PRX912 holds its own with 1,200W Class D power, 132 dB max SPL, and a 12 band parametric EQ with built in dbx DriveRack feedback suppression and limiter.
For full band live production, club gigs, or any event where the kick drum and bass need real impact, pair it with the PRX918XLF. This 18 inch powered sub delivers 2,000W peak and 1,000W RMS, reaches 134 dB max SPL, and extends bass response down to 30 Hz.
Both speakers communicate through the JBL Pro Connect app, so you can tune the entire rig from your phone instead of climbing on stage between sets.
-
How loud and how far will the SRX906LA actually throw?
The SRX906LA is a 2 way dual 6.5 inch powered line array element with 880W of onboard Class D power and a 134 dB peak SPL per box. It’s built for small to mid sized rooms, but it scales well. You can fly up to 16 boxes per hang or ground stack up to 6 boxes on top of SRX918SF subs using the included base plate.
Inter cabinet angles adjust from 0.5° to 12°, so you can dial in coverage for narrow, deep rooms or wide, short ones. Built in DSP gives you 24 user adjustable filters, up to 2,000ms of delay, FIR based Throw Distance Correction, and Array Size Compensation. That means the rig sounds consistent whether you’re flying 4 boxes or 16.
-
Are these speakers powered, or do I need to bring amps?
All four are fully powered with onboard Class D amplification and DSP built right in. There is no need for external amp racks, processors, or outboard gear. Just plug in power, run signal, select your preset, and go.
That’s one reason these series are so popular with rental houses and one truck live production companies. There is less gear to load, less equipment to break, and less troubleshooting when the doors are about to open.
One important note: neither series ships with a power cable. The SRX900 boxes use powerCON TRUE1 connectors, so make sure you spec the right cables for your rig.
-
Can I run the SRX906LA without a sub?
You can, but you probably won’t want to for live production. The 906LA puts out plenty of full range punch on its own, which makes it great for speech, acoustic acts, and corporate work where low end is not the priority.
For music, pair it with the SRX918SF flyable 18 inch sub. It shares the same width and suspension hardware as the 906LA, so it integrates cleanly into flown or ground stacked configurations and extends down to 35 Hz.
The SRX918SF also has selectable cardioid and omnidirectional presets right on the rear panel LCD. You can reduce energy on stage when needed or open it up for maximum audience coverage.
-
Do these speakers work with my existing JBL gear or other PA systems?
Yes. The SRX900 Series is voiced and phase aligned with JBL’s other tour sound products, so the SRX906LA and SRX918SF work seamlessly together in flown or stacked configurations and integrate cleanly with the broader JBL tour catalog.
SRX900 speakers also support HARMAN’s HControl Ethernet protocol with dual etherCON ports for easy daisy chaining and remote control through JBL Performance software for Windows, macOS, and iPadOS.
The PRX900 Series uses Bluetooth Low Energy and the JBL Pro Connect app to control up to 10 speakers. It also integrates with the EON ONE MK2, PRX ONE, and EON700 systems, which is especially useful if you’re mixing PRX with EON speakers for stage monitors or smaller breakout rooms.
Both series are also backed by JBL’s 7 year warranty, which is hard to beat in this category.
